A Selection of Sofas
Historically built for esteemed guests to sit apart from government councils, sofas in the eighteenth century were simply a raised section of the floor, padded with pillows and mats.
Originally existing solely for the elite, couches became more common in middle and lower class houses after the nineteenth-century Industrial Revolution. Here and now in the twenty-first century, sofas are the hub of home activity. Families spend hours together in living rooms, which makes purchasing the right sofa an important task. When choosing a sofa, comfort is key, but just as important is fashion, style and quality.
The word “sofa” covers a broad range of furniture pieces from regular two or three seat couches to loveseats, recliners, sectionals, and sleeper sofas. Each brings its own features and unique functions to a living room.
Regular sofas, or couches, are always upholstered and can seat several people. Available in an array of materials, most sofas have room for at least three people to sit comfortably, though smaller sofas only have two cushioned spots. However, the sheer size of a sofa sets it apart from a loveseat.
The loveseat – or love seat – was originally designed in the eighteenth century to accommodate a woman with a large dress, but as time progressed and for obvious reasons, the smallness of these two-seater couches led them to be called loveseats. Able to seat two, loveseats are a great choice for a small space, or as an additional sofa for a living room set. These conversation couches can be intimate, but their small size does not take away from their comfort.
Sectionals have it all. Mixing different sizes of couches together, sectionals allow you to personalize your living room for ultimate luxury. Sofa sectionals can accommodate anywhere from two to six people comfortably. Some sofa sectionals are designed as home theatre units; these particular sectionals have features such as arm rests between each seat and drink holders. Many sofa sectionals have reclining chairs built into the structure, allowing one person to recline back while another has a choice to sit upright. The configuration possibilities of sectionals are endless, and the comfort of a sectional is everlasting. Sectionals are perfect for big families, or families that entertain often.
Another feature of sectionals and some sofas is a chaise section. The chaise allows you to stretch out your legs while on the couch, without having to use a foot stool or ottoman. A chaise lounge can be long enough to feel like a bed, and just as comfortable as one too.
Another trend in living room design is to add a recliner to the mix of furniture. Recliners offer comfort, quality and durability. Recliners are designed with leading innovation and creativity in mind. Different types of recliners keep coming out and the designs keep getting better. There are modern recliners, traditional recliners, massage recliners, and even recliners with built in stereo systems that are compatible with mp3 players and other electronic devices, making your video game, music, or movie that much more fun.
Finally, sleeper sofas are dual-purpose items that also continue to develop in design. Sleeper sofas are a very economical way of combining the casual comfort of a living room couch with the soothing security of a bedroom mattress. They are also the answer to the eternal lack-of-space problem, as they are able to function as two items in a small space. Perfect for overnight guests too, sleeper sofas are now being designed so that comfort does not have to be sacrificed for style. They look good, feel good, and are a great investment for any home.
All of these types of sofas come in a variety of materials, from leather to suede to micro-fiber to cloth and more. Keep in mind the durability of materials, especially if you have pets or small children. Also to keep in mind are the colors you choose for your sofa. These colors should fit in with the color scheme of your walls, floors and other furniture in the room. Luckily there are plenty of options to choose from, and hopefully now, you have a better idea of what you are looking for.

Sectional Sofas
Sometimes, there may be situations in life where you feel that it would be better to cut up your sofa and arrange the pieces however and wherever you wish. Keeping this in mind, sectional sofas have been created to give you optimum seating while using the maximum space available.
The advantage of a sectional sofa is that it is available in different parts that, when put together, can give your home a special shape. Of course, to give your home a diversified look every now and then, it would be advisable to segregate the sectional sofa to stand alone as individual sofas. Most of the sectionals available nowadays are sleek and can be used in about ten configurations in a room. This thus makes it quite easy to plan the interior of the room. Of course, when buying a sectional sofa, it is necessary for you to keep in mind whether or you will be in the same place you are in now, in the future. This is because smaller proportions always make usage of the sectional sofa in a new apartment easy.
When choosing the sectional sofa, you could opt for colorful fabrics for the covering of the sofa. However, while opting for colorful fabrics, you have to make sure that your wall colors, drapes and other accessories in the room match the color and texture of the sectional sofa. If you try mixing and matching the sectional sofa and the cushion colors like black against white, you are sure to get a dramatic look to the sofa and to the room.
You could also try different color combinations to make the room look more spacious. One advantage of the sectional sofa is that it can accommodate many people, as there are no interruptions in the sofa, making it perfect for a reunion or a gathering. Sectional sofas do indeed give your home the advantage of beauty and style, as well as giving it a complete look.

Office Sofas
The picture of an office always produces the image of a stiff place with only straight-backed chairs and tables for office work. Now, however, most offices also have a sofa so that the employer, employee or client can sit comfortably while in the office.
When buying an office sofa, one has to consider a sofa with a good color and style, as it will become the focal point of the room and will project a sophisticated image of the office with its presence. One can choose an office sofa according to the usage and need of the office. If you think that it will be used often, then a better quality sofa that will last some time is indeed better than buying a sofa that costs less and will only become spoiled in a few years’ time. Leather is a good option for long-term usage—though it costs more, it lasts longer, looks luxurious and does not need much maintenance or cleaning. If space is a matter to be taken into consideration when buying an office sofa, it would be better to invest in a sectional sofa that can be cut and designed to fit a corner or the bend of the office. Of course, in such cases, it is better to design and order an office sofa rather than to opt for a ready sofa.
The offices running on a tight budget might consider leasing or renting of the office sofa, along with other office furniture. Rental would be beneficial as with this option, you can keep the cash flow in the pocket while enjoying the benefits of the office. Perhaps you could get a new office sofa at a very low up-front price.
However, be wary and make sure that you are really striking up a good deal because there are many dishonest individuals who may make you pay more for the sofa through rental fees than you would to purchase a sofa. So be certain to investigate the rental agreement and to consider the needs and design of the office and your budget.

Futon Sofas
The Japanese are the ones who started the futon bedding system. Actually, they used the word “shikibuton”, meaning mattress; it was the Americans who named it a futon. Unlike the Japanese, the American concept included the mattress, the convertible furniture it sits on, or both.
Basically, a futon acts as a sofa during the day and is converted into a sleeping space at night. Some of the futons have wooden frames that can be folded and put away to save space. The futon sofa has cushions that are usually stuffed with cotton batting and that can be found in a wide range of colors, sizes and fabrics. Those used to sleeping and sitting on a futon sofa rave about the good back support it provides. Another plus point of futon mattresses and cushions is that they can be conveniently moved outdoors to air out. Sometimes, the futon sofa may need some assembly. The most important thing to do while assembling the sofa is to take your time; it is best to devote a whole afternoon to assemble it. It is advisable to take an inventory of the parts of the sofa before starting. And, you should read the instructions not once, but twice for clarity. If using power tools while assembling the sofa, be careful as these tools are so strong that they may over-tighten or strip out the hardware used to hold the frame together.
The Americans first became interested in futons in the early 1970s, due to the increased interest in Eastern culture and because the inexpensive furniture produced a novel furnishing idea. Most of the futon sofa users are students, first-time homeowners and apartment dwellers saving on space. The American futon has improved with the usage of top-of-the-line hardwoods for the frame with a wide palette of wood finishes from oak to mahogany.
In the beginning, futon mattresses were covered with durable but plain materials; however, today, its covers are available in luxuriant colors and fabrics from rich brocades to lush tapestries. Futon furniture, and futon sofas, have become quite popular and are here to stay for quite some time.
