Upholstery fabric is very much prone to stains. Different types of stains can spoil the fabric. Among all, rust stain seems to be most tough. Though it is difficult to remove rust stain from upholstery fabric, yet not impossible.

Upholstery fabrics may catch the sticky stain when they come in contact with any rusting metallic object. Vinyl automobile, used for furniture upholstery, is very much sensitive to rust stain. Vinyl automobile is porous in nature, hence when it gets stained it becomes really difficult to clean unless you use a good rust stain remover .

Cleaning rust from porous fabrics can be real hard. A lot of rust removers are available in the market. Among those liquid cleaners are easier than powder based rust cleaners. You do not need to rub the fabric, just spray the solution over the stain and it will work.

Chemical Based Rust Cleaners:

You can find a lot of chemical rust cleaners in your community store. Chemical based rust cleaners are good; however, it is always suggested to use natural products because organic materials do not have any side effects generally.

Most chemical based rust removers contain oxalic acid as an ingredient. It is a very strong chemical and acts like bleaching agent. Hence, it should be used with due care and precautions. Children and pets should be kept in a safe distance while using chemical based cleaners.

To start off, apply the solution to a small part of the upholstery fabric. You can use a handy brush to rub the surface gently. Even you can do a test cleaning with a similar kind of material to understand what amount of chemical should be applied so that the fabric does not get damaged. Once you are sure about the amount of the acid suitable for your fabric, apply the solution to the other parts of the stained material.

You can also apply powder based rust cleaner. As I said before, powder based rust removers are more difficult to use. You need to prepare a solution first by mixing adequate amount of water with the powder. Then the paste should be applied over the stain. It may take some time to dissolve the stain. Then you need to rinse the fabric with plain water so that the stain gets removed completely and the acidic substance is neutralized.

Apart from oxalic acid, some rust cleaners are made of mild acids like acetic acid. Though the health risk is lesser with the acetic acid based rust cleaner, at the same time mild acids are not so effective at stain removal.

Common problems with Chemical based Rust Cleaners:

The main problems with chemical based cleaners are:

  1. They are not safe for children and pets
  2. Chances of accident are high
  3. The acidic chemicals must be neutralized after cleaning

It is needless to say that such chemicals with high acid content are not good for anybody. They should be kept in a protected place that children and pets cannot access. Top of that, the chances of accident while cleaning rust stain are high. Finally, it is essential to neutralize the chemicals once cleaning process is over. Otherwise, it may damage the fabric and harm people and pets.

Natural Rust Remover – A safe alternative:

Rust removers made of organic compounds are safe in all possible terms. The cleaning ability of organic rust cleaner is beyond any doubt. Spray based liquid rust removers clean rust stain not only from porous materials, but from any other substrates.

Upholstery fabric will put some new life into your old and ragged furniture. If you notice that your furniture has been starting to look a little worn and shaggy recently, upholstery fabric may be just what you are looking for. There are seven different types of natural upholstery fabric: Linen, leather, cotton, wool, cotton blend, vinyl, and silk.

There are also six synthetic forms of upholstery fabrics: Acetate, acrylic, nylon, olefin, polyester, and rayon. As a general rule, cotton is best if small children will frequently use the furniture, as it provides good resistance to wear, fading, and pilling. If adults will usually use the furniture, then silk may be a better bet. However, for the best all-round upholstery fabric, many people chose Olefin, for its good looks and durability. Also consider the cost savings form using wholesale fabric upholstery.

Tips on finding the right Upholstery Fabric for your home.

If you would like to upgrade your furniture using upholstery fabric but are turned away by the prices, consider looking for an upholstery fabric discount or a store that supplies wholesale fabric upholstery. Also take into consideration how much wear and tear you can expect on your new furniture. If you are able to find the upholstery fabric that best fits your needs, you will have beautiful and long-lasting furniture for many years to come.
