When most of us think about sunroom furniture. we think about wicker. Sunroom indoor furniture has traditionally been made from this versatile substance. then finished in a wide array of colors.

The airy construction and strength of the material adds a kind of tropical feel to your sunroom. letting you imagine that you are actually soaking in the sun at some holiday destination rather than lounging in your wicker chair in front of your sunroom window. But today. wicker furniture is not limited to just the loveseat and chair set that most of us are familiar with. There are also a number of wicker accessories that you can incorporate into your sunroom decorating.

Wicker has been used for a number of tools and creations since biblical times. The earliest wicker artifact that has been discovered actually came from Egypt. It was dated by archaeologists and is believed to have come from around 1400 B.C. Originally. it was formed into tools that were necessary for performing the tasks for day to day living. such as fishing or building shelter. As trade routes expanded and wicker became readily available. it began to be used for more decorative needs such as furniture and accessories. It quickly became a popular material for creating inexpensive. yet durable items. When we use the word wicker today. the word actually applies to a number of different materials. all of which can be woven into strong patterns and shapes. Rattan. bamboo. a number of reeds. willow and peelcane all fall into this category. When bent and woven. the materials can be creatively used to form anything from baskets to furniture.

When you are looking at wicker furniture for your sunroom. you will find a number of different choices available. Often. there are sets of furniture sold. including a loveseat or sofa. one or more chairs. and possibly tables that coordinate with the other pieces. However. this is only the beginning of what is available. You can find wicker ottomans. swings. rockers. wing chairs and loungers that you can add to provide additional relaxing. comfortable pieces to your furniture selections. Or. you can choose from any number of pot stands. end tables. mats. decorative baskets. wall hangings and fans that will let you carry your tropical theme throughout the room.

Alternatives To Wicker That Have A Similar Look

You’ll find other options than solid wicker furniture as well. There are a number of products that will combine wicker with a solid wooden structure. These can add a more rustic quality to your furniture. but may also add more strength to the structure if you have larger or heavier members of the household. Many other pieces that appear to be wicker are actually made from a plastic or vinyl type material that has the look of wicker but is less expensive and easy to maintain. Now there are also products beginning to appear on the market that are made of PVC pipe. These products are just as strong. look very similar to actual wicker. and are usually less expensive than wicker furniture.

Selecting Your Sunroom Furniture Fabric

When you are considering cushions and fabric for your wicker sunroom furniture. there are a couple of items to consider. First. realize that when you see the price listed for wicker furniture. it rarely includes the cushions that may be displayed with the furniture. If you are not happy with the choices that you see. ask if you can order different fabric for the cushions. If not. and if you have purchased standard sizes of furniture. then you will still likely be able to find the kind of fabric that you would like. You should also consider whether or not you will need to protect the fabric with some kind of stain guard. If you plan to entertain in the sunroom. have meals there or expect to have a great deal of traffic in the room. then protecting the fabric is a good idea. It will make cleaning any spills easier and will keep the fabric looking new for much longer.

Maintaining Your Wicker Furniture

One of the benefits of wicker or rattan furniture is that it doesn’t need a lot of maintenance or upkeep in order to keep them looking in good condition. Regular dusting will be important. since the weave will attract dust just like any other surface under your sunroom roof. But by using a damp cloth or a vacuum with a narrow pointed attachment. you can easily keep the furniture clean. The wicker itself may come in a number of colors. or can be painted if you can’t find exactly what you are looking for. However. if the wicker has been finished with a varnish. you will need to use a primer in order to have the color adhere. Sanding wicker is possible. but if done too harshly. you could damage the reeds and compromise their strength or integrity. If you ever have splitting or cracking of the weave. you can use any number of glosses. stains. paints or furniture color touch up products to keep the color looking uniform. Over time. it is possible that the weave may begin to unravel. If this happens. you can have it repaired by having the weaving redone. However. you will want to get some pricing information on making the repairs. because it may cost less in the long run to replace the furniture rather than to have it redone.

Wicker is a general term that actually describes any type of furniture or object that is woven from natural organic materials.

This includes willow. reed. rattan and bamboo. This special type of furniture made of reeds and vines needs a special type of care and environment. Many choose to accessorize their wicker sunroom furniture with stylish cushions and fabrics. These too must be maintained in order to preserve the look of the furniture.

Choosing Cushions for Your Wicker Furniture

Many do not realize that the beautiful layout they see in the ads for wicker furniture often does not include the padding or cushions. Careful examination of the small print usually reveals that cushions must be purchased separately or will only be included for an extra fee. On average. cushions for wicker furniture can be found at any department store with a home decorating section. Should the furniture require a certain size or type of cushion. there are always many options available online. Sturdy fabrics are the best choice for sunroom furniture that will see a lot of use. However. regardless of the amount of use the furniture will see. it is always a good idea to treat the cushions with a stain repellant. Not only will this help the fabric retain its composition. it will make cleaning easier in the off chance that something is spilled on the fabric!

Maintaining Your Wicker Furniture

Be sure to keep your wicker furniture away from sources of dry heat as this will make it brittle. This type of furniture will do best in environments with a certain amount of humidity in the air. The manufacturer’s instructions are the best source for information on how to restore the moisture content of the furniture. In general. the moisture content of wicker can be as easy as a quick rinsing with a garden hose.

To maintain wicker furniture and keep it in the best possible condition. a regular light dusting with the brush attachment that comes with a vacuum cleaner is recommended. Gently following the weave of the wicker will help to remove dust and debris that may have become trapped in the wicker. For heavy build up on arm rests or tabletops. wipe the wicker with a damp cloth that has been soaked in a mild soapy solution; then follow with a clean damp rag to remove any soap residue.

For bamboo furniture. a wax or polish is recommended.

The Various Types Of Wicker Furniture

Contrary to popular notion, wicker refers not to the material from which the furniture is made but to the pattern of the weave that is used in the construction.

Wicker furniture is made from a wide variety of materials including rattan, cane, bamboo, paper fiber rush or reed. Very often wicker furniture is constructed by weaving these materials over a core frame made of rattan. Because of the different characteristic of each material, wicker furniture differs widely in its looks and durability, depending on which material is used in its construction.

Rattan

Rattan has been used in the wicker furniture since ancient times and is till today the most popularly used material. The solid-core rattan pole, which is the stalk of the rattan plant, is used in the construction of rattan furniture, after its outer thorny layer is peeled off. Because of its solid core, rattan furniture is extremely strong, durable and comfortable. It accepts all kinds of paints and stains and does not splinter, break or warp, making it very versatile for all types of wicker furniture.

Cane

Cane is the second layer of the bark of the rattan palm, which lies immediately underneath the outer thorny layer. Also popularly used in wicker furniture, cane is generally used for weaving the seats and also for wrapping the joints. It is typically woven around a rattan frame. Because cane has a naturally glossy finish, wicker furniture made of cane cannot be stained or painted.

Reed

Reed wicker furniture is made of the inner pith of the rattan palm. This versatile material comes in different sizes and dimensions and is typically seen as weavers, spokes and embellishments. Obtained after removing the outer glossy layer of cane, reed is porous and accepts all kinds of paints, stains and polishes. It has a lengthwise grain and looks similar to wood, but is likely to snap and break when bent too much.

Bamboo

Though bamboo outwardly resembles rattan and is often mistaken for it, there is a huge difference between the two. Rattan has a solid core center and a blemish-free outer surface whereas bamboo has a hollow center and distinctive dark ridges where the leaves were attached. Because of its hollow center, bamboo tends to snap and break more easily and is not so popularly as rattan in making wicker furniture.

Paper Fiber Rush

Paper fiber rush is a man-made paper product that resembles a cord or a rope. Also called paper fiber reed, it has a distinctive diagonal twist and can be easily unraveled. The paper fiber strands contain a wire core that provides extra reinforcement to the weight-bearing spokes. It is often used in weaving chair seats.
